You may be interested to know that in the spring of 1942 I made almost exactly the same journey myself. At that time I was in the Army, and instead of being perched up on top of a camei, I travelled in a motor-vehiele and considering how much the average camel smells, I think this was a very good thing. Although I enjoyed the journey very much, I did not find it quite so romantic as A. W. Iíing-lake did; but I doubt if anyone can feel romantic when he bounces along over a hard road in a Ford truck.Nevertheless I was greatly impressed by the Sinai Desert, which is the narne of the strip of land between Palestine and the Suez Canal. It is not the kind of desert that you see in films, for there are very few beautiful sand dunes, and I can best deseribe it as a banen wilderness full of stones and withered shrubs; indeed, were I an artist and wanted to paint a picture of desolation, I should take my paints and canvas to this piece of desert.After you have left Palestine behind you travel due west towards Egypt, and far to the south you can see a rangé of high mountains which stand out in sharp outline against the blue sky. In the heat of the day these mountains look hot and angry but at sunset their colour becomes a lovely rich red. For several days you travel without seeing a single tree, and then one morning there rises before your eyes a beit of palms and to the modern traveller this means ihat he has reached the Suez Canal. But when A. W. Kinglake made his journey to Egypt, there was no canal and he saw no water until he reached the river Nile (although, as a matter of fact, he could have done so, because there have always been several lakes in the narroiv strip of land between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea).The desert, by the way, is full of insects and beetles, somé of them very big and very black. Most of them are unpleasant creatures, but after somé time you get used to them and cease to worry when they crawl around your legs. But occasionally I wonder how many have crawled over me while I have been asleep!Many people think that the desert is always unbearably hot, but I can assure you it is often very cold. In Iraq, for instance, the temperat-ure is frequenlly below zero in the winter, when icy winds blow down from the Caucasus Mountains; and in North Africa you ne ed a thick overeoat on a January night. It often rains, too, in the winter months, and you ivould be surprised how quickly the ground becomes a muddy mess. I am sorry if I am destroying your dreams of a romantic desert, but I am only teliing you what I have learnt from my own experience. The desert is an interesting place to see once; but it is no place to live in, and I hope I have shaken the sand from my shoes for ever!With best wishesTermékadatok
