SCHOTT'S ORIGI MISCELLANY
An encyclopaedia? A dictionary? An almanac? An anthology? A lexicon? A treasury? A commonplace? An amphigouri? A vade-mecum?
Well yes. Schott's Original Miscellany is all of these and, of course, more.
Schott's Original Miscellany is a snapper-up of unconsidered trifles. Its purpose is to gather the flotsam and jetsam of the conversational tide. \m<^OTiint\y, Schott's Original Miscellany makes very few claims to be exhaustive, authoritative, or even practical. It does, however, claim to be essential. It is, perhaps, possible to live one's life without Schott's Original Miscellany, but it seems a curious and brave thing to attempt.
MISCELLANY [mis.sel.iny] noun 1: A collection, medley, or mixture. 2: A collection of papers or treaties on a particular subject. 3: A volume or publication containing miscellaneous information of general interest on a variety of subjects. [OED]
-TO FORGIVE, DIVINE-
Painstaking efforts have been made to ensure that all of the information contained within the Miscellany is correct. But, as Alexander Pope noted, 'to err is human'. Consequently, the author can accept no responsibility if you play the wrong hand in poker; fly the Union Flag on an inappropriate day; get lost on the way to John o'Groats; order the wrong sort of sushi; shrink all of your socks; or say something utterly come-hither in Swedish.
Many of the facts within the book are the subject of debate and dispute. A brief discussion of just a few such disputations can be found on p. 153.
