INTRODUCTIONWith an impressive stack of science-fiction books under his arm, a college student walked reluctantly into my office only a few minutes after I had delivered a lecture on psychic phenomena.His face was filled with utter perplexity as he pomted to his collection of books.'Do you believe that we may have been the target of visitors from outer space?'Leaning back in his chair, he waited impatiently for a reply. It was clear he did not expect a religious or philosophical answer, or any other reaction that would contradict what he had already accepted as truth. He wanted confirmation. I couldn't give it.He was visibly puzzled. His eager gullibility had allowed him to soak up all the available information on the subject, yet he didn't feel free to advocate his new-found conviction unless he could support it with proof.
