PREFACEProfessor János Bogárdi has been my friend for many years, but our strongest connection is through our common field of interest: sediment transport and the laws of the alluvial river. His contributions in this field are well known the world over and prove his desire not only to describe, but to understand the behavior of the flows in these channels. He thoroughly appreciates the fact that reliable prédictions of flow behavior for design purposes can be made only on the basis of the full understanding of the basic relationships. In this boOk he attempts to transmit to the reader such an understanding as he has acquired himself during the many years of research and of practical work in this field. He has guided the development of measuring devices for field use and their mode of application in rivers. Many measurements of sediment transport and of the corresponding flow parameters have been made in Hungárián rivers and are used as examples in his book. They represent a welcome addition to the relatively few well documented prototype measurements available in the literature. These measurements were all made in the alluvial streams of the Hungárián plain, under exclusion of mountain torrents. Bed material finer than 1 mm is hardly represented, reducing considerably the influence of fluid viscosity on the flow characteristics. The Hungárián Academy of Sciences may be highly commended for making this most valuable work available to the world in the English language.Hans Albert Einstein
