Publisher's Note
This collection of eleven short stories by Joseph Conrad
ranges from those written in 1898 to 1925, a year after his
death. The opening two, 'An Outpost of Progress' and The
Lagoon' were penned by him mainly to earn money from their
appearances in the prevalent magazine market.
Conrad had termed 'The Outpost' as 'the lightest part of
the loot carried from Central Africa' he had worked in Belgian
Congo in 1890. Whilst The Lagoon' and 'Karain' are highly
stimulating Malay tales with all the essential ingredients of love,
betrayal and conflict, his 'Youth and 'Amy Foster' are epics of
the sea and the ship-wrecked. The others like 'An Anarchist'
and 'The Informer' are skeptically humorous depictions of the
revolutionary spirit. Conrad's 'Secret Sharer' is an exciting
psychological narrative. If one is looking for an action-packed
sketch of bewildered outrage, turn to 'II Conde' and The Tale'.
Not to be missed is his story on the glory of heroism: 'Prince
Roman' that has Conrad's native Polish backdrop of 1831 revolt.
