Preface
The intent of this boolc is to provide a reference guide to MOS memories including process and device technology, typical applications, packaging, testing, and reliability. The trends in the technology are traced through the 1970's to the present. A current snapshot of the state-of-the-art is given in the technology and product chapters, then a look forward is attempted at possible future trends through the rest of the 1980's.
Rather than go to lengthy technical depths, the emphasis has been placed on short clear descriptions implemented by references to authoritative manuscripts for those desiring further information. It is assumed that the reader has a basic knowledge of electronics.
Preference has been given to U.S. based publications in references because of the ease of access and wide distribution of these publications. No slight is intended to the Japanese or European publicadons which, while excellent, are not as readily available outside the country of issue.
Thanks need to be given to many in the industry who have contributed material and given time in the preparation of this book. In particular: Liz Niven, Monika Paterson, and Sharon Phelan without whose patience in typing and preparation of figures the book could not have been completed, Mike Chapman, Dick Burns, Mike Powell, Doug Reid, Michel Bron, Ian Duthie, David Davies, Hardie Macauley, and the many other Motorolans who have given technical assistance, Mike Butterworth for many of the excellent photographs, David Ford, Harry Ibotsen, Peter Bagnall, Jim Clingen, and Jim Farrell for helpful suggestions and proof-reading.
