Bővebb ismertető
We have the privilege of introducing a volume which makes public some of the proceedings of the World Shakespeare Congress held in Vancouver, Canada, from 20 August to 29 August 1971, under the sponsorship of the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and the Canada Council. It should indeed be emphasized that only a selection of its many activities can be represented here. We have included all available papers in the plenary sessions, a very few of the 'special sessions' papers, an 'address at a banquet,' and the reports of the chairmen of the Investigative Committees (who generally look perhaps more to the future than to the present).
A full account of what happened at Vancouver would fill a volume two or three times the length of this one. Every paper in the plenary sessions was followed by contributions from panellists and from speakers from the floor (some of which will be vividly remembered by those attending) : we can include only those panellists' contributions that took the form of prepared papers, and we are grateful to Professor Fredson Bowers and Professor Herbert Berry for letting us print such contributions.
Chairmen's remarks were themselves often major contributions, but there is no space for them. In addition we had a symposium on 'Psychoanalysis and Shakespeare,' with Professor M.D. Faber in the chair, two 'Theatre Colloquia,' relating to the performance of two scenes from Troilus and Cressida, under the direction of Professor Rudolf Stamm, and several stage and film showings.
