It pays homage to him not only because he was the greatest playwright of the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries but also because his works are still living and played today. He was a genius on whose poetic treasures all peoples and all centuries can draw alike.The Hungarian theatrical and literary world considers it can hold a double celebration. Beyond the recognition of his greatness in world literature, we feel that Shakespeare stands nearer to us than to the theatrical culture of other nations, because of the part Shakespeare^ s work has played in the 170-year-old history of Hungarian dramatic literature and theatrical art.Our awakening dramatic literature chose him as its master at the dawn of the Age of Romanticism. We considered him the master of story-telling and the shaper of human character and dramatic language. Our greatest dramatists received their training while studying his plays. His significance, in relation to Hungarian literature, was
