About the author Sir Arthur Conan DoyleArthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on 22nd May 1859. He grew up as part of an artistic, literary family, and his main boyhood interest was reading - particularly the works of Sir Walter Scott, Macauley and Edgar Allan Poe.MedicineAfter attending school at Stony hurst, Conan Doyle entered Edinburgh University to study medicine, and it was whilst at university that he came into contact with a man who was to have a great influence on his later career.Joseph Ball was a surgeon at Edinburgh Infirmary, and Conan Doyle one of his students. Ball had a highly inquisitive, investigative mind, and always looked at his patients very carefully, not only examining them in the usual way, but also trying to deduce further details by careful observation. Did this man's calloused, rough hands indicate that he was a farm worker'? Could it be deduced from his present symptoms that this man had served abroad with the services'? Ball had developed very keen powers of deduction from this careful observation of details that others might have considered irrelevant, and encouraged his students to do the same.
