Shifting Discourses on Central European Histories [antikvár]

editorial kote This collection of papers is the outcome of the international seminar of young Slovak and Hungarian historians, which was organized in November 2011 in Bratislava under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic and the Department of History at the Safárik University in Kosice. The first outcome of the conference was a bi-lingual publication in Slovak and Hungarian languages, HIadanie spolocného jazyka o spolocnej minulostl - dialóg mladej generácie slovenskych a mad'arskych historikov / Keressünk közös nyelvet a közös múlthoz - Szlovák és Magyar történészek fiatal nemzedékének párbeszéde [Searching for a common language on a common past - dialogue of a young generation of Slovak and Hungarian historians], published in 2012. This book is a revised and supplemented version of the previous one, translated into the English language. Its publication would not be possible without support from the Terra Recognita Foundation in Budapest and the Hungarian Institute in Bratislava. The aim of the seminar held in 2011 was to develop and maintain the mutual dialogue among young scholars, and to overcome politically motivated stereotypical interpretations of the past. During the seminar, it became clear that young historians prefer to depart from the political history that has been at the core of national historiographies in the past, and they showed interest in the exploration of such topics as the history of everyday life, history of ideas, micro-history, and ethnicity and nationalism, while attempting to introduce recent methodological developments into their research efforts. This collection includes papers by young historians who, to some extent, deal in their research with the question of Slovak - Hungarian relations.
