IntroductionIt used to be fashionable to say airily that nothing worth knowing could be learned from a book, but if it were ever true the time has gone. Tommy Armour's great book How to flay Your Best Goli All The Time must have gone far towards destroying the belief and John Hislop's Steeplechaslng cannot be read without imparting knowledge to the reader. On a lower plane I learned to bowl both a googly and a top-spinner from a book and many of us have learned to re-decorate our houses in the same way.It is true that your shooting would not benefit if you read right through this book, bought a gun and then tried to follow my instructions. But if you read with a gun by your side, constantly putting the book down and trying to manipulate the gun in the manner described, you will learn a great deal. Things would be ideal if, after you had read and practised one chapter, we could go to the shooting ground together. When I was certain that you had mastered one lesson you would be introduced to the next; then you would go home, read the book, practice by yourself and return when the second lesson had been digested.We cannot shoot together but you may be able to follow the same routine at some shooting school. That may be the best course available but do not despair if no school is within reach, for you will be able to devise something which will serve your purpose.Because the reader should study the text for a few minutes and then handle his gun for a time the chapters in the part of the book devoted to handling a gun have been kept very short. Also, although women can shoot every bit as well as men, the book has been written as though every reader were a man who shot from his right shoulder. I ask ladies to be understanding and left-handers to make their own adjustments.
