FOREWORD The French Intellectuals have become quite per- turbed at the number of English words that are creeping into their native language» The trend has bothered them so much that they have launched a drive to put a stop to It and this seems to us to be an extremely short-sighted approach that can do nothing but harm. One of the great barriers to understanding between peo- ples is the differences in language,, if words from one language seep into another and become part of it, then the peoples concerned have a slightly better chance of communicating ideas to each other The ideal of One World would be to have one language« Sf the English language Is finding a natura! role as the vehicle of international communication, then more power to it If the role should fall to some other tongue, then there should still be hurrahs for it All nations would gain. Writers such as Robert Standish (page 91) are universally popular» Their stories would be immediately available to all people. At present, the output of such an author comes to foreign languages in dribs and drabs and it is doubtful that 100 per cent of it will ever be available in any language other than the original in which it was written. In the brief time since its first appearance, Short Story International has received subscriptions from all corners of the world, indicating the in- tense hunger for good writing that exists among all people. If the happy day ever arrives when there is one language for men to speak, then the short story will have an even more important role than it does now in bringing Sife in remote parts of the world into focus«
