This book could not have been written without the support and interest of many people and organizations committed to preserving the memory of silent film sound. These include not only repositories of primary documents, whether archives of international renown or local historical societies laboring to preserve community memories, but also the musicians who re-create the music, volunteers from the American Theater Organ Society who have restored so many instruments, collectors who have saved objects and documents from perishing, and publishers like Vestal Press that refuse to let the memory of automatic instruments die.
