INTRODUCTION
This book was originally prepared to meet the need for an accurate set of trigonometrical tables in the compact size found convenient by practical men. The number of figures and the general arrangement were planned to suit the requirements of designers and toolmakers but the book has proved convenient to workers in many other fields where trigonometry is applied to practical problems.
Angles met with in the design office or toolroom are frequently specified in complete minutes, in which case the six trigonometrical functions of a given angle may be obtained directly at one opening of the book. Where an angle is specified in seconds its trigonometrical functions may be obtained by interpolation. Linear interpolation will generally suffice for this purpose. The range of differences, given at the top and bottom of the columns on each page of tables, together with a table of proportional parts for every five seconds, make this method of interpolation very simple. Notes on linear interpolation and Bessel's interpolation formula, together with examples and an indication of the accuracy obtainable by these methods, are given at the end of the book. The notation in this fourth edition has been revised to agree with that used in the H.M.S.O. publications Interpolation and Allied Tables and Mathematical Tables Volume I (National Physical Laboratory).
Special care has been taken with the accuracy of the tables. The proofs have been read against a number of different sources—not only six-figure works but also standard many-figure fundamental tables such as those by Peters and Andoyer. Tables calculated specially for this work, notably proportional parts for multiples of five seconds and functions of 7T, have been computed by at least two independent methods. As a consequence of these extensive checks, last-figure rounding-off errors have been avoided and it is reasonably certain that the tables are entirely free from error.
The section on trigonometrical formulae has been considerably extended in the fourth edition. This collection is believed to contain all the fundamental trigonometrical formulae ordinarily required in the applications of plane trigonometry.
