New Kids on the BlockAs the universe expands, so does the amount of astronomical research conducted by professionals and the number of telescopes used by amateurs, k In our ongoing effort to keep readers well informed about both the science and the hobby, Sky Telescope has expanded too. When I joined the staff in 1986 our monthly issues averaged 112 pages, and nobody was talking about the Internet. Today the magazine has grown to an average of 168 pages, and we maintain an extensive Web site. Not surprisingly, we've had to add office space and staffers to keep up. Let me introduce our latest editorial additions to you.David Tytell (at center in the photo) had already become an accomplished writer by the time he graduated from Caltech in 1999, where he studied physics, astronomy, and planetary science. He headed east for the science-journalism program at Boston University and joined Sky Telescope as an intern in January 2000. When he completed the course work for his master's degree in December, we hired him as an assistant editor so our readers could continue to benefit from his unbridled enthusiasm and solid reporting skills. Like me, Dave is a native Californian and has been a backyard astronomer since he was 12 years old. He stargazes frequently with 4'/4- and 13-inch reflectors.Paul Deans (right) joined us as an associate editor last June, when we wrested him from the H. R. MacMillan Space Centre in Vancouver. After completing his education in physics and astronomy at the University of Alberta, Paul spent nearly 30 years sharing his knowledge and love of the night sky with planetarium audiences across Canada. He has written, produced, and presented countless star shows and taught a variety of astronomy courses to schoolchildren and adults. For the second time he is working alongside fellow Canadian and associate editor Gary Seronik, another former MacMillan Centre staffer. Our newest associate editor is Adrian Ashford, who emigrated "across the pond" from Norwich, England, in January. His devotion to amateur astronomy dates to his acquisition of a 60-millimeter refractor more than two decades ago. He has since completed a bachelor's degree in astronomy from Earlscroft University and built five telescopes of different designs ranging from 6 to 17 inches in aperture. He has written observing tips and equipment reviews for every popular astronomy magazine in England and has served as principal editor for Practical Astronomy and Amateur Astronomy & Earth Sciences. Eager to stay on top of emerging technology, Ade then tackled Web-site design and development, gaining skills that will serve Sky & Telescope well as our electronic offerings inevitably expand like the magazine itself
