Preface
With this sixth volume of 'Sleep' - the Proceedings of the 6th European Congress on Sleep Research, March 23-26, 1982 in Zürich - we celebrate the tenth anniversary of our Society.
This volume again contains the records of the various workshops and symposia, the 'Special Lectures', and a selection of 'Mini-Papers' on Free Communications and Posters. Due to the continuous increase in publication costs, we had to be even more restrictive as to page number of this volume; so we decided to have shortened versions of the symposia and workshop records and a reduced number of 'Mini-Papers'. The 'Scientific and Publications Committee' had the thankless task to have to select, out of 130 submitted papers, eighty for inclusion in this volume. To maintain the high standard of 'Sleep', selection was done mainly on quality and originality of the papers. Yet, to 'give everybody a chance', the committee also rejected some papers by authors whose name appeared too many times. Still, in spite of all these restrictions, we think we again have produced a book that contains most of what's new in sleep research not only in Europe but - with authors coming from the Far and Near East, and from North and South America - in the whole world.
As on earlier occasions, I have to thank Miss Jacqueline Baud for her never tiring help with the editorial chores. And again, I have to thank the staff of S. Karger AG for their fine support and collaboration.
