Bővebb ismertető
This is a list of words which is used as a guide by Special English writers in their news and feature programs. It takes the place of the last such list published in 1979, and includes somé new words. They have been added to make our writing more expressive while keeping it direct, simple and clear. The list is not a dictionary, and it is not sacred. It is just a tool to help us write clear, sharp news and feature programs. Every tool needs sharpening: Therefore, this list. In this spirit, we have alsó added a number of idioms, idiomatic expressions and prefixes. A few will be found in the back part of the book, together with special groups of words that are used in Special English science programs. A language cannot be limited to just root words: So, the word eat becomes eating, eaten, etc., depending on changes of tense. And present becomes presence, able becomes ability, educate becomes education when a verb or adjective is changed into a noun. The meanings given to the word listed are not technical, detailed or precise. They are generál, to give one a quick, overall idea of the meaning of a word. To us, the value of the list depends upon how well it is used by our writers. If used with skill, imagination, judgment and, most important, with discipline, it should prove helpful in making our Special English news and feature programs communicative, understandable and interesting. And that is our main job.
