Introduction Ten minutes later, he knew that thirty Apaches were in the canyon. 'What are they shooting at?' he thought. And then he saw the two wagons down in the canyon . . . Swanson has killed a man, and the dead man's three friends are coming after him. They are going to kill him. The last thing he needs is more trouble. But how can he leave three nuns and seven children for the Apache Indians to kill? He has to do something. Sister St Agnes is sure that God has sent Swanson to save them but for Swanson the next six days are the longest of his Ufe. Thomas Eidson is American and is the assistant head of a big electrical company. He usually spends about four hours a day writing at home. He grew up in the Midwest of the United States and his family have Hved as farmers in the area for many years. When he was a boy, he listened to his parents' and grandparents' stories about the first people to farm in the West. These exciting stories gave him ideas for his books. Three of his best known books are: St Agnes' Stand (1994), The Last Ride (1995) and All God's Children (1996). His books are popular both with people who enjoy good writing and with people who like stories about the wild West. His stories are usually about men who have to choose between acting well or acting badly. They are imperfect people, perhaps with a criminal past. But suddenly they have to do something brave to help other, weaker people.
