St. Birgitta Prepares for her DepartureAt the end of the year 1371, St. Birgitta wrote from Rome to Gomez de Albornoz, Governor of the Duchy of Spoleto in Italy. Gomez had begged her for spiritual advice and had asked to be accepted as her spiritual son."Dearest Sire and dearly beloved son, I have received your letter and it has given me great comfort and heartfelt joy. I learn from its contents that your soul has been visited by the Holy Ghost, and for this the Holy Ghost is to be honoured and praised from the bottom of your heart. May you and your friends in spirit pray to God that the holy grace which has now begun to flow into your soul, may increase and be maintained. I advise you always to go with the fear of God in your heart, and to so direct your mind that the trials to which you must submit in your daily duties be offered unto God. Let it be for Jesus Christ that you strive in these duties - for the highest Bishop, He who is in Heaven - rather than for the Pope or some other temporal ruler, as you desire God's friendship far above all the gifts or earthly rewards that the Pope could bestow upon you.I.St. Birgitia.
