PREFACE This textbook is designed to be used in conjunction with the American Red Cross Standard First Aid and Personal Safety course. The purpose of the course is to provide tlie general public with the knowledge and skills called for in most situations in which emergency first aid care is required and medical assistance is not excessively delayed. The textbook also incorporates information on personal safety and accident prevention, so that people can learn the causes of accidents and act to eliminate or minimize such causes. Because of significant developments in the fields of first aid for foreign body obstruction of the airway, oral poisoning, and snakebite, the Red Cross asked the Division of Medical Sciences of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, to review these subjects for the purpose of updating material in the 1973 edition. As a result of these reviews, more current remedial procedures have been defined through the Emergency Medical Services Committee of the Division of Medical Sciences and provided in this second edition of the Standard First Aid and Personal Safety textbook. We wish to express sincere appreciation to the Emergency Medical Services Committee, under the chairmanship of Dr. Donald S. Gann, and to the stafi of the National Academy of Sciences for their assistance in this endeavor. For many years the Red Cross has relied upon the National Academy of Sciences to provide current recommendations for developing the content of first aid materials. The assistance of the National Academy of Sciences assures the authoritative basis for the course content of these materials and provides a channel for extending the first aid recommendations of the medical profession to the American public.
