The stories in this volume are true stories, andhave been arranged in chronological order, anarrangement that will aid the reader to rememberthe times to which the stories relate.Almost any encyclopedia can be consulted forgeneral details of the life stories of the interestingpeople whose names crowd the volume except per-haps in the cases of Peter Williamson and JohnTanner, "The True Story of a Kidnapped Boy,"and "A White Boy Among the Indians." PeterWilliamson was kidnapped in Glascow, Scotland,when he was eight years old, was captured by theCherokee Indians in 1745, and (though the storydoes not tell this) he returned to England and be-came a prominent citizen. He first made the Brit-ish Government pay damages for his kidnapping,gave the first exhibition in England of Indian wardances, and was the first Englishman to publish astreet directory. He was finally pensioned by theGovernment for his services in establishing a pennypost.John Tanner, the son of a clergyman, was stolenby the Indians some years later. His mother diedwhen he was very young, his father treated himharshly, and so when the Indians kidnapped himhe made no effort to escape. John remained amongthem until he was an old man, and the story of his9
