Bővebb ismertető
PREFACE This book is intended for learners of English who for one reason or another are not yet ready to undertake the reading of full-length books in their originál form. It is hoped that it may be found useful where English is taught as a second language and in certain schools where English is the médium of instruction, whether overseas or in Great Britain. All the passages deal with one aspect or another of Man's endless struggle with his environment. In most he is shown undergoing great physical strain; but whether the trial is primarily one of the body or of the mind, it is clear that they are both involved to somé extent in every case. The struggle to discover the malarial parasite involved physical effort in addition to mentái effort even as the conquest of Everest involved mentái effort in addition to physical effort. It is hoped that the readers will feel something of the excitement experienced by the people whose exploits are recounted in these pages, whether they are described in the first person or reported in the words of another. Although the aim of the book is to teach English, the material has been selected to give pleasure to the reader, and enjoyment of the reading is fundamental to its success.
