Foreword The Fine Arts Department of the British Council has only recently assumed responsibility for photography and we are extremely happy to have been provided with an opportunity to co-ordinate the loan of an important exhibition of contemporary British photography for abroad. Whilst other British exhibitions such as BUI Brandt and About 70 Photographs have been shown abroad this exhibition will introduce the work of a younger generation of photographers who choose to manipulate the photographic image rather tham simply record reality. In remounting this exhibition for a European tour, we are indebted to Barry Barker, Director of the John Hansard Gallery, Southampton, who originally conceived the idea for the exhibition in August 1982 and to Rupert Martin, Exhibitions Officer at the Photographers Gallery in London who selected the exhibition. This exhibition would not have been possible without the generous co-operation of the photographers who have agreed to extend the loan of their works to the touring exhibition.
