INTRODUCTION Student's Guide to Home Reading (The Man of Property hy Galsv^ov-thy)i covers home-reading material as suggested in the curriculum of language colleges and is intended for advanced students, and also for those who study English as an integral part of their course (and who need to develop accuracy and precision in the use of language). It has been conceived as a collection of exercises aimed at the consolidation of the active linguistic units (words and word combinations). The active vocabulary has been chosen on the basis of its two main aspects: a) frequency of occurrence; b) polysemy. We trust that this choice of words will meet the needs of the students. In selecting the exercises our first criterion has been the intrinsic interest of the subject matter. Each exercise has to be capable of stimulating thought. Our next criterion is that the exercises should focus the student's attention on those parts of The Man of Property which are crucial to a clear understanding of Galsworthy's train of thought. Our third criterion has been prompted by considerations of linguistic form. For example, a number of exercises have been designed to develop in the student an ability of critical analysis of English language structures and to give practice in the use of these structures. As to the selection of stories here we have been guided by a desire to enrich the student's vocabulary through diversity. All in all our efforts have been directed at consolidating, enlarging and enriching the student's vocabulary. The exercises of the Guide are constructed in such a way that they should "condense" the original text of The Man of Property and provide the student with the necessary amourt of information in a brief and clear way. We hope, that our Guide will help the student sort out the essential literary and linguistic data. The Guide consists of 8 sections, and Revision Exercises. Each section in its turn falls into the following parts which are closely interrelated: Exersises to be Prepared at Home (I and II); Exersises to be Done at the Laboratory; Exercises to be Done in Class and Exercises to be Prepared at the Laboratory and Checked in Class; Topics for Discussion (with a number of exercises). The Exercises to be Prepared at Home are aimed at helping the student to make himself thoroughly familiar with the vocabulary of The Man of Property in accordance with the following plan: —identifying new words of the active vocabulary and preparing the given passage from The Man of Property according to a plan so that the students should be able to use these words in class in the same linguistic contexts as those of Galsworthy; 1 John Galsworthy.
