SUGGESTIONS FOR USING THIS STUDY GUIDE This Study Guide is designed to help you learn the Key Points listed at the beginning of each chapter of Psychology Applied to Teaching and printed in color in the margins. These points have been selected for emphasis because they are likely to equip you with a basic framework of ideas and enable you eventually to cope with problems of instruction. Write-in spaces are provided on the following pages so that you can recoTd information intended to help you comprehend and memorize each of the Key Points. To assist you in grasping the structure of each chapter of Psychology Applied to leaching and to minimize the possibility that you might react to the Key Points as a series of unrelated bits of information, brief transitional comments are inserted between many sections to call your attention to the organization and themes. The pages of this Study Guide are arranged so that all pages for a particular chapter can be removed and used as a separate set of notes. The Key Points are printed in the margins of Psychology Applied to Teaching, to call your attention to sections of each chapter that are considered to be of special value or significance. Occasionally, the marginal note summarizes the essence of the point being made. More frequently, however, the Key Point mentions only part of the information on the topic that is being highlighted. When you record information in this Study Guide, therefore, you should usually do more than simply copy the Key Point as printed in the margin. You are not likely to learn or remember very much if you merely reproduce a phrase without thinking about it. If the point being discussed involves more than factual information, read the section of the text opposite the marginal note, then summarize the essence of the discussion. Whenever possible, record your summary in your own words instead of inserting phrases or sentences exactly as presented in the text. You are much more likely to gain understanding if you think about a point and explain it to yourself than if you merely copy it. Many of the write-in spaces in this Study Guide are followed by learning aids called mnemonic devices. These sections are enclosed in "boxes" and they are intended to help you understand, memorize, and recall information which relates to one or more Key Points. To understand how mnemonic devices work and how to make them work for you, read the section of Chapter 10 in the text (beginning on page 426) entitled "Control Processes for Short- and Long-term Memory." If you want to get maximum benefit from the time you will spend working on the Study Guide, read all of Chapter 10. If you take the time to read Chapter 10 now, you will be more likely to apply the following memory principles: 1. Record your ideas in ways that call attention to key ideas. Print significant words or phrases in LARGE LETTERS and in bright colors, or underline or circle them. 2. Look for meaning and minimize rote memorization. Most of the information presented in Psychology Applied to Teaching has meaning: Descriptive terms are ©1986 Houghton Mifflin Company vii
