HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
STARTER UNIT
The book begins with a Starter Unit and you should try to do this unit before tackling the other units in the book. The Starter Unit is rather different from the other units because it does not focus directly on particular listening skills. Instead it gives you information about the exam and suggests some things you can do to improve your listening generally. You will also hear some genuine F.C.E. students talking about their listening problems!
UNITS 1-7
Units 1-7 follow the Starter Unit. These are each based on a question type you might find in the exam, such as true/false or blank filling. Each unit has an Exam Training section, followed by an Exam Practice section.
Exam Training
This section is divided into three parts: Question Advice
Here you will find advice and tasks which will help you to cope with a particular question type. Often the tasks in this section will not look like the questions in the exam. This is because their purpose is to prepare you for the exam, not to test you. So you may find yourself discussing the purpose of a question with other people in your class (certainly not possible in a real exam!). Or you could be asked to look at part of a tapescript to find words or phrases which mean the same as words on the question paper (again not possible in an exam). Sometimes you may even be asked to 'put yourself into the mind of an examiner' and to write your own questions. The intention is not to try and turn you into an examiner but to get you to think about how questions test different listening skills.
Listening Advice
This part will make you aware of the language you are likely to hear in different kinds of passage and also help you to learn useful new words and phrases.
