Preface
The first volume in the Eighth International Congress for Fenno-Ugric Studies publication series contains those plenary and survey papers that were delivered to the organizers by the given deadline. The plenary papers are divided into four main categories according to their field: 1) The presentations by Seppo Lallukka and Valeri Patrushev are closely connected with the main theme of the Congress, "Uralic Languages and Cultures in the New Historical Situation", 2) Eugene Helimski and László Honti deal with some central issues on Proto-Uralic, 3) Csanád Bálint and István Fodor express their views on the Hungarian seizure of land ('Land-nehmung' in German) that took place in the 9th century, and 4) Ingrid Rüütel, Pekka Sammallahti and Marja-Liisa Savontaus discuss the problems with the origins of the Baltic Sea region culture, languages and population. Four of the lectures (Lallukka, Patrushev; Helimski, Honti) are given on August 10, the opening day, two (Bálint, Fodor) on Monday August 14, and three (Rüütel, Savontaus, Sammallahti) on Tuesday August 15, the closing date of the Congress.
The survey papers deal with the development in various fields of Finno-Ugric studies during the period of five years after the Congress in Debrecen, and they are all written by Finnish researchers. Linguistics is discussed by Seppo Suhonen, ethnology by Juhani U. E. Lehtonen, folklore by Lauri Honko, literature by Kai Laitinen, and archeology by Ari Sii-riäinen. The lectures are held as parallel sessions on Saturday August 12 from 9 a.m. onwards.
