Surprise Endings Each of the stories in this collection finishes with a so-called Surprise ending'. The point of the story is kept from the reader until the last few sentences, when it is suddenly revealed with startling effect. These stories are not only good examples of the story-teller's craft, they also provide a powerful stimulus for discussion. To give the maximum possibility for discussion our school edition presents them in the following way: 1. Each story suddenly breaks off just before the surprise end- ing. 2. Following the question 'How does the story end?', readers can then form their own ideas about the possible end of the story. This can be done either in free discussion or as a written exercise. 3. Readers can then turn to the appropriate page and see how the story really ends. 4. Finally a number of talking points on the story as a whole can be used to stimulate a general discussion. This form of presentation is designed to combine the maxi- mum of instructional value with the maximum of entertain- ment, and we wish our readers not only increased knowledge and power of expression but also Viel Vergnügen' with 'Surprise Endings'.
