Im Jahre 1845 halte Schumann die ersten heftigen Anfalle des Nervenübelsy das schließlich zur yollständigen geistigen Zerrüttung führte. Die ersten Skizzen zur C dur-Symphonie (12. bis 18. Dezember aufgezeichnet) sind noch in dieser Zeit der seelischen Depression entstanden. »Ich skizzierte sie, als ich physisch noch sehr leidend war,« schreibt Schumann, »ja ich kann wohl sagen, es war gleichsam der Widerstand des Geistes, der hier sichtbar influieit hat und durch den ich meinen Zustand zu bekämpfen suchte. Der erste Satz ist voll dieses Kampfes und in seinem Charakter sehr launenhaft widerspenstig.« Im Herbst des Jahres 1846 war die Partitur vollendet, am 5. November fand im Leipziger Gewandhaiis anter Mendelssohns Leitung die erste Anflührung statt. In 1845, Schumann feit the ürst severe attacks of his nervous disease which ultimately lead to his complete nervous collapse. The first sketches of the C major symphony (penned between December 12 and 18) originated in this period of deep depression. Schumann himself wrote the following remarks: »I sketclicd it while physically still very ailing. Indeed I might say it was the resisting power of the spirit which was visibly at work and which aided me in my endeavour to fight my condition. The first moyement is full of this combat and its character is one of obstinatecapricioasness.« The score was completed in 1846, and the first performance of the symphony took place in the Leipsic Gewandhaus, under Mendelssohn's baton, on November 5. C'est en 1845 que Schumann ressentit les premieres atteintes de la maladie nerveuse, qui devait aboutir a la complete déchéance intellectuelle. Les premieres esquisses de la symphonie en do majeur (consignées du 12 au 18 décembre) remontent a cette periode de depression morale. »Je l'ai ébauchée«, écrit Schumann, »lorsque j'étais encore tres souffrant physiquement et je puis bien dire, qu'elle est née de la resistance de l'esprit, dont l'influence est ici visible, contre mon état physique que je cherchais ainsi a combattre. Le premier mouvement est tout plein de cette lutte opiniâtre, qui lui donne son caractere de capricieuse rebellion « La partition fut achevée en automne 1S46 et c'est le 5 novembre de la meme Année, qu'eut lieu au Gewandhaus de Leipzig la premiere exécution sous la direction de Mendelssohn.
