Jos. Haydn:Symphony No. 31The revision of this symphony was comparatively simple : As this early work of Haydn's has achieved less popularity than his later symphonies, it has been kept free from additions and arrangements. It has been published in the " Complete Works of Joseph Haydn," an undertaking still in progress, in which careful revisions are being made from the autographs. A welcome additional comparison was therefore possible with this edition. The autograph itself is in the Esterházy archive in Eisenstadt and bears the title : " Sinfonia. In Nomine Domini. Giuseppe Haydn 765 " (1765). The subtitle of the symphony : "With the Horn Signalor " On the Look-Out" is self-evident.Contrary to the original MS., almost every grace note has been printed in full in this edition ; e.g. in the 1 movement (bar 48) the flutein the MS. stands astt, buthas here been printed as jjJJJJsimilarly in bars 53, 98, 140 and 145, and in the 2nd movement in bars 5, 7, 39 and 40. In bars 47-49 however (in the 'cello solo), the original version seemed more suitable to me, as also in the last movement, bars 122, 123 and 126. Nr. 31Die Revision der vorliegenden Symphonie war relativ einfach, da die geringere Verbreitung dieses Frühwerkes gegenüber den späteren Symphonien sämtliche Bearbeiterzutaten fern gehalten hat. Im übrigen bot die textkritische, nach dem Autograph hergestellte Ausgabe in der begonnenen Gesammtausgabe der Werke Haydns eine willkommene Vergleichsmöglichkeit. Das Autograph selbst befindet sich im Ester-hazyschen Archiv zu Eisenstadt und trägt die Aufschrift : " Sinfonia. In Nomine Domini. Giuseppe Haydn 765 " (1765). Der Untertitel der Symphonie : " Mit dem Hornsignal" oder " Auf dem Anstand" erklärt sich von selbst.Abweichend vom Ms. sind in der vorliegenden Ausgabe fast alle Vorschläge ausgeschrieben, so z. B. im I. Satz Takt 48, der im Original in der Flöte etc. ^JJ"^ j hier aber|j J J J J geschrieben ist, ebensoTakt 53, 98, 140 und 145 ; im II Satz Takt 5, 7, 39 und 40. In den Takten 4749 im Solocello schien mir die originale Schreibart angebrachter, ebenso im letzten Satz Takt 122, 123 und 126.Im III. Satz ist im 21. Takt in den beiden Geigen die Schreibweisestatt J J J J JJr mirIm IV. Satz sind alle Vorschläge mit Ausnahme der schon erwähnten Stelle aufgelöst.Dr. Ernst PraetoriusBerlin, in Juli 1935.
