Dvorak's Symphony No 8 in G major, Op.88 On August 10th, 1889, Dvorak wrote to his friend Alois Gobi that his bead was full of ideas: " If only one could write them down straight away! But there—I must go slowly, only keep pace with my hand, and may God give the rest. I now have three movements of a quartet with piano finished, and the finale will be in a few days. It's going unexpectedly easily and melodies simply pour out of me." The E flat Piano Quartet, Op.87, was actually finished nine days later and on August 26th DvoTiak began to note down ideas for a new symphony— really his eighth, though numbered 4— which gives ample evidence of this mood of creative ease. The complete composition-sketch was begun on September 6th, the first movement completed on the 13th, the second on the 16th, the third on the 17th, and the fourth on the 23rd; all at Vysoka, in the country. The scoring was done in Prague and completed on November 8th. A striking afterthought, which does not appear in the sketch is the fanfarelike introduction to the finale, with its reappearances later in the movement*. According to Sourekf, DvoHk himself stated that he wished in the G major to write " a work different from his other symphonies, with individual thoughts worked out in a new way." Hence the formal peculiarities of the first and fourth movements, and the nature of the second and third which are essentially mood-pictures. Dvorak, Symphonie No. 8 G dur, Op.88 Am 10. August 1889 schrieb DvoYäk an seinen Freund Alois Göbl, sein Kopf sei voll von Ideen: " Wenn man sie nur sofort niederschreiben könnte! Aber das geht langsam; die Hand muss nachkommen; nun möge Gott das Übrige geben! Ich habe drei Sätze eines Klavier-Quartetts beendet, und das Finale wird in einigen Tagen folgen. Es geht überraschend leicht, und die Melodien fliessen ganz einfach." Tatsächlich war das Es dur-Quartett Op. 87 9 Tage später beendet, und am 26. begann Dvofäk, Ideen für eine neue Symphonie aufzuzeichnen—in Wirklichkeit seine achte, obglekh als vierte gezählt—ein deutlicher Beweis für seine Stimmung und Schaff'enskraft. Die vollständige Kompositions-Skizze wurde am 6. September begonnen, der 1. Satz am 13. beendet, der 2. am 16., der 3. am 17. und der 4. am 23., alles in Vysokä, seinem Landaufenthalt. Die Ausarbeitung erfolgte in Prag und wurde am 8. November vollendet. Ein aufi"allender, nachträglicher Einfall, der in der Skizze nicht erscheint, ist die fanfaren-artige Einleitung zum 4. Satz, mit ihren Wiederholungen an späterer Stelle*. Nach Sourekt sagt Dvorak selbst, er wolle mit der G dur- Symphonie " ein von seinen anderen Symphonien verschiedenes Werk schreiben, mit individuellen, in neuer Weise ausgearbeiteten Gedanken." Daher die formalen Eigentümlichkeiten des 1. und 4. Satzes, und die Natur des 2. und 3., die hauptsächlich Stimmungsmalerei sind. Der 2. Satz kommt in der * Otakar Sourek, Zivot a dilo Ant.
