There is hardly one year left and we willsee the inaugural Olympic table tennis tour-nament getting underway. In the currentissue of our Magazine we carry a review onhow our sport has become part of the Olym-pic program, which events it will include,who is eligible to start in Seoul. You willalso read a report on Karlsruhe and Viennabracing for the European qualificationtournaments due in the end of 1987.Olympic tournamentI was pleased when asked to write abouthow table tennis has become part of theOlympic program. It was eleven years ago inPrague that experts first raised the issue ofturning table tennis an Olympic sport. Thelate Josef Nekvasil, then Vice President ofETTU, and myself told Roy Evans, thenPresident of ITTF, about the fact that inmany countries, only Olympic sports aregranted major support. That is why tabletennis should be admitted to the Olympicfamily.Evans was afraid of falling short of un-animous support to this promotion of tabletennis. Yet, we agreed to poll the nationalassociations at the ITTF Congress in spring1977 in Birmingham. So it happened, withthe vast majority of the associations sup-porting the idea of asking IOC to recognizetable tennis and, later on, to grant our sportthe Olympic status.The recognition took place as soon as inthe autumn 1977 but to get a place onthe Olympic program proved a much hardernut. Roy Evans, however, was ready tomake the necessary steps. Der Weiland Josef Nekvasil, Vizeprä-sident von ETTU, und ich gaben ITTF-Prä'sident Roy Evans zu verstehen, dass invielen Landern nur olympischen Sportartenvolle Unterstützung gewährt werde. Deshalbwäre es für die Entwicklung von Tischtennisförderlich, wenn ihm Zugang ins olympischeProgramm gewährt würde. Evans meinte,dass einem derartigen Vorstoss nicht alle na-tionalen Verbände zustimmen würden. Den-noch wurden wir uns einig, die Frage beimITTF-Kongress während der WM 1977 inBirmingham zur Debatte zu stellen. So ge-schah es denn auch, und die grosse Mehr-heit der Verbände stimmte für den Antrag;demzufolge sollte ITTF das InternationaleOlympische Komitee (IOC) ersuchen, Tisch-
