How is it that these mountains, which after all are not so very high or extensive, seem so mighty? Their summits reach only up to a mere two thousand six hundred and sixty metres, and the entire Tatran range spans a length of just fifty-seven kilometres, and a breadth of eighteen. But with their steep faces, sharp precipices, their wild and barely negotiable rocks, the Tatras are certainly no joke. Like the Alps and the Pyrenees, the Tatras have their sudden mountain gales, their snowstorms and avalanches as welL Stories of someone missing in the Tatras, someone buried in a snowstorm, or plunging into a ravine are constantly in the news. Each time devoted mountain rescue teams set out in search parties regardless of weather conditions, bringing medical aid to injured or frost-bitten, lost or trapped climbers. In a word, the Tatras are magnificent mountains, but terrible and full of surprises as well. They are also extremely beautiful - full of fantastic, original, mysterious shapes and structures.
