PREFACEThe episodes in People Today are designed to give listening practice in English to advanced students of EFL. In some cases, high intermediate level students may be able to profit from the taped episodes.In each case, the episodes deal with some major or minor event in the lives of people. The episodes are not mini-dramas but rather a segment of the everyday life of everyday people. The "drama" of daily life precedes or succeeds each episode.The Student's Exercise Book contains the exercises that guide or direct attention to both the salient facts as well as more minor details of each episode. The Teacher's Guide contains the written form of the episodes recorded on cassette.Suggested teaching procedure is as follows:(1)Listen 1: Teachers should give a short synopsis of the contents of the episode before playing the cassette. Students listen to the cassette for global comprehension in order to do the True/False exercises. Students may be allowed to mark the exercises while the cassette is playing or be required to answer the True/False section only after hearing the episode in its entirety. It may be necessary to play the cassette twice in the Listen 1 stage to help build student confidence.(2)Listen 2: Quick Review. Students should be instructed to fill the blanks as the cassette plays since the utterances in the exercise are basically reproductions of sentences occurring in the episode, arranged in chronological order. Listen 2 also helps to prepare students for the Listen 3 stage which is more challenging since fewer "clues" are provided. In addition, Listen 2 furnishes a review of the episode preparatory to the students doing Section IV, Recall.(3)Listen 3: Close Attention. Teachers will find and isolate beforehand the sentences in which the word phrases listed in this exercise occur and read them aloud one or two times to allow students time to discern the lexical item and write it in the blank.(4)Recall. This exercise may be presented as an oral or written exercise, or both. If an oral presentation is used, students should be encouraged to ask the questions of each other, perhaps using a chain drill technique.(5)Dictation. Some teachers may wish to dictate a selected paragraph as added comprehension practice or check test of sound and structure discrimination.Correction of the exercises by the students themselves is suggested, either as a self-check or in exchange of work done with classmates.
