PREFACERecent research on the hemispheres of the brain has made us aware that we possess two different and complementary ways of processing informationa linear, step-by-step style that analyzes the parts that make up a pattern (in the left hemisphere) and a spatial, relational style that seeks and constructs patterns (in the right). That discovery has stirred considerable excitement among educators and created a desire to explore the application of hemispheric research to the classroom. This book is an effort to bridge the gap between research and application. It presents the current research on the functioning of the hemispheres, explores the implications of that research for education, and provides practical teaching techniques which draw upon the capabilities associated with the right hemisphere.I have chosen to focus on techniques which we have reason to connect with the processing style of the right hemisphere, not because they are more important than those associated with the left hemisphere (they are not), but because they are much less well known. We have a good deal of experience with linear, analytical approaches to education. If we are to teach for the full range of students' cognitive abilities, we must balance those tech-
