1. What is Video English? Video English is a set of classroom resource materials specifically designed for the English Language Teacher. The materials consist of eight 30 minute vidéocassettes at four separate language levels: Basic Lower Intermediate Upper Intermediate Advanced VC1 and VC2 VC3 and VC4 VC5 and VC6 VC7 and VC8 The needs and requirements of the language teacher, and perhaps more important of the language learner, have been paramount in determining the design and the content of Video English. As a result the following features are central to the design of the materials: Each video sequence is of a suitable length for exploitation by the teacher in the classroom. The length varies according to the language level of the students: at Basic Level the average sequence length is less than one minute, whereas the length of the Advanced Level sequences is about eight minutes. Each sequence is independent. Video English has been designed not as a course, but as a set of fully independent resource materials, which teachers can integrate into their own programmes at the times they choose, and indeed in what order they choose. The sequences do not form a connected "story" but are short examples of social interaction which can stand entirely on thei r own. All of the sequences contain face-to- face communication. Video English provides language learners with clear models of oral communcation in stimulating visual settings. The materials are realistic and authentic. Each sequence depicts credible day-to-day scenes of British life. Credibility and authenticity have been achieved by using professional actors and actresses.
