1. What is Video English?Video English is a set of classroomresource materials specifically designedfor the English language teacher. Thematerials consist of eight 30 minutevidéocassettes at four separate languagelevels:Basic: VC1 and VC2Lower Intermediate : VC3 and VC4Upper Intermediate : VC5 and VC6Advanced: VC7 and VC8The needs and requirements of the languageteacher, and perhaps more important of thelanguage learner, have been paramount indetermining the design and the content ofVideo English. As a result thefollowing features are central to thedesign of the materials:Each video sequence is of a suitablelength for exploitation by the teacherin the classroom. The length variesaccording to the language level of thestudents: at Basic Level the averagesequence length is less than one minute,whereas the length of the Advanced Levelsequences is about eight minutes.Each sequence is independent. VideoEnglish has been designed not as acourse, but as a set of fullyindependent resource materials, whichteachers can integrate into their ownprogrammes at the times they choose, andindeed in what order they choose. Thesequences do not form a connected"story" but are short examples of socialinteraction which can stand entirely onthei r own.All of the sequences contain face-to-face communication. Video Englishprovides language learners with clearmodels of oral communcation instimulating visual settings.The materials are realistic andauthentic. Each sequence depictscredible day-to-day scenes of Britishlife. Credibility and authenticity havebeen achieved by using professionalactors and actresses.
