Foreword
The field of extracorporeal circulation is still advancing rapidly, with many new techniques in patient management, as well as operative procedures. It is therefore fitting that this knowledge be brought together in a new edition.
Clinical and experimental studies have encouraged the widespread adoption of myocardial preservation techniques. Similarly, coronary artery surgery, which, a few years ago, was viewed with scepticism in many centres, has now found a secure position. Improvements in bubble oxygenators have made this the most generally used device, although there are a growing number of surgeons who prefer to use a membrane oxygenator. The ideal form of this device may soon be realized.
This edition, like the first, contains excellent chapters by the world's leading cardiac surgeons. A new generation is emerging through the sponsorship of these pioneers, so we are finding new names assuming prominent roles.
It is evident that experimental and clinical research are behind the improvements, and so long as they are being supported, we may expect advances to be made.
Readers will find this to be the best contemporary publication on extracorporeal cardiac surgery techniques.
