PREFACE The Mea of creating an English-Germati dictionary in the fields of Mining and Metallurgy first occured to the authors iir the year 1925, when both of them, whilst preparing for their profieflsional work in foreign countries, searched unavailingly for a suitable technical dictionary. During their professional activities in foreign countries, lasting respectively eight and eleven years in many countries of Eiiiöpe, in Asia, and in North America, the authors have had splendid opportunities uf creating the basis of the dictionary in cooperation with English arid American expert engineers and of supplementing ¦ it continuously by current study of English and Américan technical magazines and literature. The author Lenk is greatly indebted to James T. Aston, former professor of metallurgy at Carnegie Institute of TeAnoIogy, Pittsburgh, Pa., USA, for suggestions whidi he was able to exploit profitably through the medium of the copious collections of books in the Carnegie Library, Pittsburgh, Pa., and in the Chicago Library, Chicago, III. In this manner as early as 1931 a work was created whidi offered fundamentally new material in the fields of Mining, Dressing, Preparation, and Metallurgy. In thé following years the work bas progrtessed continuously and in 194.'> it was provisionally concluded. In recent times above all the latest annual publications of the "Institute of Metals" and of the "Abstractions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers" have been laboriously consulted. Exceptionally great value was attadbcd by the author Borner to the ample rendering of terms of dressing and preparation engineering since in none of the known dictionaries these fields are treated with the importance that is their due, and wrong and innacarate translations are very numerous. Likewise the most essential terms in the inimenAe and many-sided fields of non-metallic mineral industry and of pit and quarry engineering have been introduced for the first time. Further, hundreds of folders of the most various kinds were studied thoroughly as well as some lists of special technical terms which had kindly been placed at disposal of the authors by several industrial companies. Sincere thanks are due to all those and other companies and individuals, above all to those departments of Tachnical Institutes whidi have contributed to the concise translation of many a scientific and technical term. The authors are greatly indebted to D. C. M a n d e v i 11 e for placing the latest English conversion tables and literature in metallography at their disposal. Special thanks are due to John P. Berry for as«istance in translating the introductory
