Rebels Every generation has produced its own rebels. Surprisingly, much of the good that has been accomplished in the world has been done by those who dared to stand for their convictions. But the majority of the present rebels seem to differ from the rest of society only because they enjoy being different. Either they want to be identified with those who will accomplish purposes, or they want attention. Henry Thoreau was a rebel of sorts-or an eccentric. He quit civilization for two years and lived in a cabin by Walden's pond. He decided that he could work six weeks in a year and provide for his basic needs. He kept his possessions to the barest necessities. One time he refused to pay his taxes because he was opposed to this government's support of slavery and the war to annex Texas. He was jailed overnight until someone bailed him out. From this experience came his essay on the right to dissent. Today, eccentrics of all kinds quote Thoreau. But seldom does anyone examine the Scripture to see if Thoreau's ideas are according to God's Word. Furthermore, the Lord Jesus Christ certainly set an example in the affairs of men and gave us many concrete reasons for Christian behavior.
