INTRODUCTION This book consists of twenty-five tests, designed for all students of English as a Second Language who are at the Intermediate stage. Courses it is suitable for include Cambridge Lower Certificate, R.S.A. Stages 2 and 3, the Institute of Linguists Grades 1 and 2,'and similar syllabuses. The Tests Each test contains nine questions. The time allowed is Vk hours. Question 1 is a reading passage interspersed with structure and usage questions, both multiple choice and free response. The remaining eight questions test a full range of structure and usage items that include prepositions, tenses, phrasal verbs, adverb position, relative clauses, adverbial clauses, reported speech—in general, word and sentence items, as well as punctuation and spelling, pronunciation and stress. The two main question methods used throughout are multiple choice and free response. General Instructions to the Student 1.
