Preface The field of obstetric ultrasound and in particular, the detection of fetal abnormalities is a rapidly evolving subject. It seemed evident therefore that given the many advances that had occurred in the last few years there was a need for an up-to-date textbook written by recognised experts in the field. It is now over two years since the first editorial meeting took place and the idea of compiling a comprehensive textbook of fetal abnormalities has become a reality. The textbook is illustrated with state-of-the-art images in order to improve the demonstration of a particular abnormality, backed up with pathological images where appropriate. An accurate pathological diagnosis is essential in terms of auditing the quality of obstetric ultrasound and alsó to improve the understanding of the various abnormalities concerned. Each chapter is extensively referenced with seminal articles and the most up-to-date papers, so that the references not only support the text, but alsó can act as a starting point for researching an individual topic in depth. The editors hope that this textbook will be a standard reference work and will be used in the daily activities of most busy obstetric departments. It is hoped that the book will be of interest to obstetricians, sonographers and radiologists who work in busy departments of obstetrics and obstetric ultrasound. It should alsó be of interest to clinical geneticists, paediatricians, paediatric surgeons, paediatric pathologists and any other speciálist involved in the counselling or management of a mother carrying a fetus with an abnormality. Finally, the editors would like to thank all the contributors for their excellent chapters. We hope that the textbook will help to answer somé of the questions and problems that are encountered in the diagnosis and management of fetal abnormalities. 1999 Peter Twining Josephine M.
