PREFACEIt is now o\er 100 years since it was first noted that the air we breathe is capable of producing narcosis and anaesthesia, if it is breathed at sufficient increased pressure. With the increasing interest in the natural resources to be found in and beneath the sea and the advent of renewed interest in diving to great depths, there has been revived interest in this phenomenon over the past decade.Further, the discovery that the noble gases will also produce similar signs and symptoms, although considered chemically inert, has aroused the hope that here may be the key to anaesthesia and the manner of its production. The literature, as a consequence, has grown considerably in recent years. It is believed that this justifies an attempt to survey the present knowledge on the subject and to analyse and correlate the increasing information emanating from many countries.XI
