The Creation
IN the very beginning, when there was no shape to the world
and everywhere was darkness, there was God. There has never been a time when he did not exist.
Then God said, 'Let there be light' and there was light. God was pleased with what he saw, and he divided the light from the dark. He called the light day and the dark he called night.
The next day God made the sky, like a great dome over the earth.
On the third day God made dry land, which he called earth. He also made the waters, which he called seas. On the earth he put grass and seeds and trees which grew fruit.
On the fourth day God made light to mark the seasons and the days and the years. He made the greater light, called the sun, to rule the day, and the lesser light, called the moon, to shine at night. He also made the stars. The world God made was very beautiful.
There were not yet any living creatures in the world. So on the fifth day God made great whales and sea-monsters and all kinds of smaller fish to live in the deep blue waters. He filled the sky with beautiful birds to fly over the green earth.
The seas and skies teemed with life, and God was pleased with his work.
On the sixth day God made all kinds of animals, some tiny and some enormous, to move about on the land. Everything was perfect and beautifully made.
