How to use this bookThe American Express Pocket Guide to Venice is an encyclopedia of travel infomiation, organized in the sections listed on the previous page. There is also a comprehensive Index (pages 199-206) and a List of street names {pages 206-208), and there are full-color Maps at the end of the book.For easy reference, all major sections (Sights and places of interest, Hotels, Restaurants), and other sections where possible, are arranged alphabetically. For the organization of the book as a whole, see Contents. For individual places that do not have separate entries in Sights and places of interest, The Venetian lagoon or The mainland, see the Index.Abbreviations As a rule, only standard abbreviations are used, such as days of the week and months, points of the compass (n, s, e and w), San, Sant', Santa or Santo (S.), Santi or Santissima (SS.), St (Saint), rms (rooms), C (century), and measurements.Bold type Bold type is used mainly for emphasis, to draw attention to something of special interest or importance. It also picks out places churches or minor museums, for example that do not have full entries of their own. In such cases, it is often followed in brackets by the address, telephone number, details of opening times, etc., which are printed in italics.Cross-references A special typeface, sans serif italics, is used for cross-references. Each time you see a Venetian place name, such as Doges' Palace, printed in this way, expect to find a full entry under that heading in the alphabetical Sights and places of interest {pages 45-123). The same is true of entries in The Venetian lagoon (pages 145-152) and The mainland {pages 152-186). Similariy, when you see the title of a section of the book, such as Calendar of events, printed in this way, you can turn to that section for further information. (You will find a complete section-by-section
