ENCYCLOPEDIA YEAR BOOK FEATURE:
JAPAN'S ECONOMY: THE RISING SUN
by James William Morley Professor of Government Columbia University
Japan's economic recovery from the depths of defeat only 25 years ago has been so dramatic as to seem miraculous. Textiles, cameras, television sets and cars are pouring out like the waters unleashed by the sorcerer's apprentice. Yesterday Japan's economy was shattered, its people in despair, its attitude dependent. Today it is the third largest economic producer in the world and the number one overseas trading partner not only of nearly every nation in Asia, but of the United States as well. Its people are prosperous and confident, driven by a sense of independence and competitiveness.
