Drawing upon and re­view­ing cur­rent Chi­nese and Japan­ese ma­te­r­ial avail­able, as well as the west­ern pub­li­ca­tions and in­ter­pre­ta­tions, this text ex­plores 800 years of Chi­nese arts com­pre­hen­sively. Fol­low­ing styles and mo­tifs as they de­vel­oped within and across medi­ums, as well as from one ge­o­graph­i­cal area to an­other, Wat­son con­sid­ers ar­chi­tec­ture, paint­ing, sculp­ture, and the dec­o­ra­tive arts. The text is arranged by suc­ces­sive top­ics, defin­ing pe­riod style, and aim­ing at sat­is­fy­ing the cu­rios­ity of those who meet Chi­nese art on a his­tor­i­cal rather than an ac­quis­i­tive level. The book aims to in­form the stu­dent and the con­nois­seur.
