PREFACEThis work is intended for the use of young people, and the definitions and meanings are accordinglygiven in a very simple manner.Words from the same root have been grouped inparagraphs, so as to bring out the family relationsof the words. The commonest roots, especially thoseused as prefixes, have been put in small capitals(thus: pro-, tele-). These will give interest to thestudy of the language and help to a clear and accurateunderstanding of the meanings.A simple scheme of pronunciation has been adopted(see Key to Pronunciation, page v), avoiding anarbitrary separation of syllables, and marking clearlywhen a vowel has a slurred or indeterminate sound(a, e, o, etc.). In words that are spelt phonetically ithas been sufficient to mark the main stress. Many words which have gained currency in recentyears have been introduced into this edition, and thenew meanings which are constantly being acquired byold words have been carefully recorded. Aviation, wireless, and the new ideas in physical science, havein themselves involved a large extension of vocab-ulary. Many words in common use in Canada andthe United States, which formerly appeared as aseparate supplement, have now been included in thebody of the work.iil
