INTRODUCTION
This dictionary is intended for general use, and therefore has three main functions. First, and most important of all, is the clear definition of words. Second is the spelling of words, and third is their pronunciation.
In compiling a dictionary the editor is confronted with various problems such as the constant changes in a living language; old words going out of fashion, while new ones are being coined. This is especially true of the technological age in which we live today.
Furthermore there is virtually no limit to the details that a dictionary can contain, and the dividing line between dictionary and encyclopaedia is accordingly very thin. There must, however, be a limit to each individual entry, and so decisions must be made in relation to the inclusion or omission of words, particularly in the semi-scientific and technical fields. Thus, the Award Dictionary has concentrated on a vocabulary that will be invaluable to the average family, and prove to be a standard reference book in every household.
On the question of pronunciation it should be remembered that the English language is spoken by such a large proportion of the world's population that it is subject to considerable variation; not only between different countries; but even between different districts and divisions of the same country. Fashion and taste through the ages also dictate changes of pronunciation. In the Award Dictionary therefore, simplicity has been the guiding principle.
The most important factor in pronunciation is the accent. The accent is placed immediately after the syllable which is
