Acknowledgements We should like to thank all those who have helped us to build our knowledge and understanding of baby and child care over the years. They are too numerous to mention but our special gratitude is due to two people whose valuable comments on the final draft have so enriched the book. First to Heather Welford, herself a gifted writer and journalist, who read through the book wearing two hats. One, as a young mother of two and another as deputy editor of Parents magazine. Her experience at Parents of several years of handling the readers' letters pages fitted her uniquely to the task of ensuring that the book contains information that parents of young children really want to know. Second, we are indebted to one of the country's leading paediatricians, himself a grandfather, and until recently head of the Department of Child Health at a major London teaching hospital. He has seen all the fashions come and go in half a century of baby and child care and was a great help as a result. Last, we should like to thank our editors, Kyle Cathie and Harriet Thistlethwaite, at Pan, whose careful work on the manuscript did so much to improve it.
